What does a fuel marketer do?
Fuel marketers play a critical role in the supply chain for petroleum products in the United States. They fulfill various fuel needs–wholesale and retail–for conventional, alternative, and renewable fuels; heating fuels; and lubricants for residential, commercial, agricultural, and industrial uses.
Approximately 10,000 independent fuel marketers are working to distribute about half of the gasoline and diesel fuel sold in America every year. These businesses purchase petroleum from extensive production and distribution companies and provide efficient supply and delivery to convenience stores, gas stations, and other home and commercial locations for heating and power supply. An independent marketer purchases fuel from various suppliers depending on price and availability, while branded marketers (also called oil jobbers) purchase most of their product from a single major refiner.
Fuel marketers often have three sides to their business structure:
- First, they distribute fuel and petroleum products to other companies in the fulfillment of fuel orders. These experts are experienced with the oil market and are efficient in negotiating the best supply deals, predicting future fuel prices, and leveraging volume purchases. As a result, the best marketers can provide tremendous pricing to their customers in the supply chain process.
- Second, they may operate their own set of retail convenience stores and fuel stations to sell fuel under their own label. Prominent fuel marketers with ten or more of their own branded convenience stores are called “chain retailers.” As such, they have hands-on experience with what it takes to operate a consumer-focused business successfully and understand the specific needs customers have in today’s marketplace.
- Finally, the most innovative fuel marketers look beyond their numbers to provide business development services that help channel partners build and operate successful convenience stores and fuel stations to meet the changing needs of American consumers. Business owners benefit from the knowledge and skills of a larger organization with decades of experience in the petroleum industry to grow their companies and increase profitability.
